Simple Applesauce Cake Recipe

This applesauce cake recipe is simple and quick, along with the applesauce muffins recipe which is tasty and fun to make.

My son loves anything made from apples. We live on the east coast near several apple orchards so Fall is the time that we go all out eating all things appley. --Is that even a word?

I found this applesauce cake recipe and tweaked it to suit our penchant for all things rich and creamy versus spongy and cake-like. A touch of sour cream does the trick. For less richness, simply leave out the sour cream. I also added walnuts, and a caramel icing recipe that I swiped from another cake that I don't make as often.

The applesauce muffins are a fast treat you can whip up even for a party. They don't cost much but will be a big hit, no matter how you decide to top them. Cinnamon-sugar, caramel frosting; even whipped cream or just a dusting of powdered sugar work well with these.

For a truly authentic homemade flavor use our homemade applesauce recipe in these harvest time treats.

Applesauce Cake Recipe

Most everyone has a basic bundt pan stashed in a cabinet, and this is the perfect recipe for it, but in case you don't take a look at these, and in meantime you can use a 9x11 cake pan or even 2-8 inch rounds.

You will need:

  • 1 Box Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1 2/3 cup Applesauce
  • 1/4 cup Sour Cream
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 2 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 cup finely chopped Walnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees

  1. In a small bowl combine the sugar and cinnamon.
  2. Grease a 10 inch bundt pan with butter, then coat with about 1 Tbsp of the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  3. Blend the cake mix, applesauce, sour cream and eggs until moistened, then beat according to the directions on the box.
  4. Separate out 1 1/2 cups batter and pour remaining batter into the bundt pan.
  5. Sprinkle the batter in the pan with remaining sugar/cinnamon blend, then pour in the remaining batter.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes using box instructions as a guide. Cool 15 minutes then invert on serving plate.

Let cool completely and sprinkle with confectioners sugar, or frost with our Caramel Icing Recipe.

This applesauce cake recipe, and any cake with fruit in it, works best in a simple bundt pan without intricate detailing.

Bisquick Applesauce Muffins Recipe

When I was a kid my mom used to work magic with Bisquick baking mix. This recipe isn't far removed from the applesauce cake recipe and requires most of the same ingredients except for the Bisquick, which I think is something every fun frugal mom should have in her pantry.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

You will need:
  • 2 cups Biscuit Baking Mix
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup Applesauce
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 Tbsp Oil

These muffins have a very easy to do cinnamon-sugar topping, but you can also frost with our caramel icing if you prefer or just for a change if you find yourself making these often.

For the topping you will need:
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp. Melted Butter
  1. In a mixing bowl, first combine the Biscuit baking mix, sugar, and cinnamon. Then add the applesauce, milk, egg, and oil to the Bisquick mixture.
  2. Stir just until all the ingredients are combined. Don't over beat. Spoon into greased muffin tins filling 2/3 of the way up.
  3. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
  4. Let cool for about 10-15 minutes then remove from tins.

To make the topping combine the sugar and cinnamon. Dip muffin tops in melted butter then dip in cinnamon/sugar mixture. Arrange on a serving dish.

Not just for muffins and cupcakes, a good muffin tin can also be used to make cinnamon rolls, mini quiches and even indivdual servings of meatloaf.
