If you want to learn how to face paint you don't have to spend big bucks on different face painting supplies just to give it a try it.

First, if you don't want to spend money experimenting with face painting you can learn how to make face paint with a few simple ingredients from the kitchen.

Here are some frugal alternatives to professional face paint supplies to get you started.

  • Blush: You can use powdered blush to cover large areas and get an airbrushed effect. Use a makeup sponge or even your finger and apply heavier than you normally would on your cheeks.
  • Eye Shadow: Whether cream or powder, the wide range of colors that eye shadows come in mean their use in face painting is only limited by your imagination.
  • Eye Liners: Awesome for face painting because they come in large point, fine point and even powder, or liquid with a fine brush. Plus they come in tons of colors and depending on the brand you can find them for as low as $1 each. Eyeliner is great for outlining shapes and adding details.
  • Lipstick: Aside from the regular lipstick shades, which are great to color around cheeks and eyes, you can find lipsticks in black, blue and even green. Check the "teen" makeup brands in your local discount store for the more dramatic colors at affordable prices.
  • Body Glitter: This stuff is just fun and you can put it anywhere on your face or body. It comes in cream form and even in lotions. The cream form, which looks a lot like a lip gloss, is easier to use for face painting.
  • Add these low cost application tools to your face painting supplies.

    • Q-Tips: Great for concentrating color, or adding dots or details.
    • Makeup Sponges: Used damp with traditional face paints, however when you use regular make up as face paint supplies you can use them dry.
    • Makeup Brushes: True face paint artists invest quite a bit of money in their brushes and other supplies. Understandable, but certainly not necessary if you're just learning, or just want to face paint for a kids party. Inexpensive makeup brush kits can be found at discount stores, and even dollar stores. The variety of brushes and applicators work great when experimenting with face painting.
    • This video is a great example of how to use regular makeup for dramatic face painting.

There are also face painting kits made especially for beginning face painters that won't cost much money.

Whichever way you go with your face painting supplies you and your kids are going to have a blast!
