Lots of variety but keep in mind, because this is an AOL product your kids will have access to AOL mail from here. There a also a bit more advertising than I usually care for on a kids site. My 12 year old uses this site quite a bit for the free kids online games and pop "news".
UpToTen.com: Cool games and songs for elementary kids. Neat sound effects and good click and drag practice. This site offers free as well as paid subscription services. This link takes you directly to the free side.
National Geographic Kids: I think this is a wonderful site. There are interesting educational games with clever themes, as well as videos of kids around the world. There are kid friendly recipes and an option for kids to build their own personalized page from where they can safely surf National Geographic pages, send free Ecards, and test new games.
Sports Illustrated Kids: If you've got middle schoolers who love sports show them this site. It's so full of stuff, sounds, and action that they'll be busy for hours. The cool part for you is that it's all free. :)
theKidzpage.com: This site has a lot of everything. Games, learning activities, printables and coloring pages. There is also downloadable clipart and holiday themed pages.
PBS Go! It's My Life: Offered by PBS, this site offers free games, articles and advice for tweens and preteens on things like money, emotions and school.
Match 4: Exactly like Connect Four, only on your computer and you play against the machine. Good luck with that. :) Fun for kids and adults. Requires strategic thinking.
Battleships: A classic that's still so much fun. Sound effects and computer graphics make this a great single player game. Learn to work with grids and promotes strategic thinking.
Free Rice: Intoxicating vocabulary game. Each correct answer donates 10 grains of rice to a world hunger organization. Great for middle school aged kids to adults.
