Remember, Remember

The most popular free party games for kids use just the little knick knacks you have around your house. This game does exactly that.

You will need:

  • A fancy tray, or serving platter

  • A variety of small items (10-15). Knick knacks, small toys, or simple household items.

  • A cloth large enough to cover the tray.

  1. Arrange your items on the tray making sure you're out of sight when you do it. Cover the tray with the cloth.
  2. Have all the guests sit in a circle and put the tray in the middle of the circle.
  3. Uncover the tray and give everyone 1 minute to take a look at the items on the tray and try to memorize as many as they can.
  4. Cover the tray back up and go around the circle having each guest name an item on the tray. (Make it easy for yourself by having a list of the items to check.)
  5. Keep going around the room until someone names an incorrect item or repeats an item. That person is out. After a few more turns rearrange the items and show them again this time for only 30 seconds.
  6. The winner is the last person left in the circle.

To make it even more fun, and more difficult for older kids, pick up the tray after a few turns and swap out some items. Or give them less than a minute to study the tray. For young kids use less items and give them more time to study the tray.

Musical Chairs

Probably the most well-known and most played of the free party games for kids.

You Will Need:

  • Chairs - One less than there are players.

  • Music
  1. Line the chairs up side by side, each facing the opposite of the one next to it.

  2. Start the music and have the players march around the chairs.

  3. When the music stops the players must scramble to the nearest available chair. One player to a chair.

  4. The player left standing after each round is out until only one player is left on the last chair.

Free party games for kids are easy to change around and make more fun. Don't line the chairs up. Instead leave them spread randomly throughout the room and watch some real scrambling when the music stops.

Pass the Orange

This free party game for kids can be for any occasion. Just switch the orange to any another small round object that fits your theme. Ex: An apple, mini pumpkin, rubber ball, water balloon..etc.

You Will Need:

  • An orange for each team
  1. Divide your group into teams of at least 4 or 5.

  2. Teams line up with the first person holding the orange under their chin.

  3. With hands behind their backs, the first person passes the orange to next person in line.

  4. Teams pass their orange down the line as fast as they can. When it gets to the last person that person runs to the front of the line.

  5. The first team to get their orange back to the front of the line is the winner.

Brown Bag Mystery

Free party games for kids that can be played with things you find around your house just take a little imagination

You will need:

  • Plain Brown Paper Grocery Bag

  • A variety of small items

Stash an item in the brown bag and without looking in the bag have everyone take a turn feeling the item and take a guess at what it is. After one guess the bag moves to the next person.

If the player guesses correctly they get a prize and you switch the item in the bag.

This works best if an adult holds the bag and takes it from player to player to avoid any peeking eyes. :)

First to Whistle

I saw this played at one of my son's cub scout meetings and knew I had to list it in our free party games for kids.

You will need:

  • A box of saltine crackers
  1. Have all your players line up and give each one a cracker.

  2. On "Go" everyone must put their cracker in their mouth and start chewing.

  3. The first person able to do an audible whistle whins....I mean...wins!

If you're playing this game with older children have them put two or even three crackers in their mouth at one time.

Penny Race

You will need:

  • A jar of pennies

  • Decorated Coffee or Soup Cans
  1. Divide the group into teams depending on how many cans you are able to find. Flower pots, empty jars, sand pails, or trick or treat buckets can also be used.

  2. Give each team a cup full of pennies and place their can at the opposite side of the room.

  3. One at a time each person on the team puts a penny between their knees and "walks" it over to the can. They have to get it over there and drop it in the can without touching it. Younger kids can pick up a dropped penny and keep going. Older kids have to leave the dropped penny and go back to the start and get a new one from their cup.

  4. The team that gets the most pennies in the can in the allotted amount of time wins.

Cotton Bowl

You will need:

  • Big bag of Cotton Balls

  • One large and small bowl for each team of two

  • A blindfold (a scarf or bandana) for each team

  • A Spoon for each team
  1. Divide the group into teams of two.

  2. Have one team member sit in a chair with the blindfold on and the larger bowl filled with cotton balls in their lap.

  3. The other team member holds the smaller bowl on the first team members head.

  4. On "Go" the blindfolded players use their spoons to scoop cotton balls from the bowl in their laps to the bowl on their heads.

  5. After a minute call "time" and have the players put their bowls on the floor in front of their chairs and switch places.

  6. After the second minute of play the team with the most cotton balls in the small bowl is the winner.

During the game the person holding the small bowl can give the blindfolded player directions but they can not take their hands off the small bowl.

This game is good for kids 7 and older.

Pins and Rice

One of our almost free party games for kids, this game can be played one of two ways. You can prepare one bowl of pins and rice and work your way around the room giving everyone a chance to play, keeping track of everyone's score as you go. Or, you can prepare several bowls and break the group up into teams to compete together. I'll explain the team version.

You will need:

  • A fairly deep bowl - soup or cereal type bowl.

  • A bag of Uncooked Rice

  • About 100 tiny safety pins (these can be purchased in Walmart type stores in the crafts/sewing dept for less than $2 in most cases.) Practically free party games for kids. :)

  • A Blindfold
  1. Pour rice and pins into each bowl and mix well.

  2. Divide the group into teams. If there is an uneven amount of people the team with the least players can have someone take two turns.

  3. Players are blindfolded and on "Go" they feel through the rice and find as many safety pins as they can in the time allowed.

  4. Each player gets 60 seconds. At the end of the rounds the team that was able to find the most pins wins.

If you're playing this game one at a time, keep track of how many pins each person gets then put all the pins back in the bowl after each turn so everyone has a fair chance at finding all 100 pins.
