Historical Sites: The Perfect "Staycation" Destinations

Visiting historical sites is great plan for a family "staycation". If you can't take a traditional family vacation this year consider making plans for a family "staycation" instead.

This newly coined phrase was born from current economic struggles that are keeping families home this summer.

But that doesn't mean you can't have fun as a family. Just make some plans centered around your home instead and have the perfect family "staycation".

Along with visiting your local recreational hot spots, a staycation is a great time to plan to visit sites that preserve the local history. Some of us are fortunate enough to live near national historical spots as well.

In addition to museums your family can visit historical homes, monuments, landmarks and reenactments. Lots of historical locations now have interactive activities aimed at drawing in families with young children to keep the learning fun and interesting.

Call or visit your board of tourism to find out what interesting sites are near you. Get copies of special events schedules, then put your staycation on the calendar.

  • Pack some picnic lunches and plan to visit the local pool.
  • Let your friends and relatives know you won't be available.
  • Have some dinners out and fill the fridge with fancy desserts.
  • Take on the attitude of being on vacation.

Spend your days having some fun in your own town and learning about its unique history.

Don't forget to seek out other sources of local family fun. Take advantage of all the cultural and recreational activities near you.
