Flat to Fizzy
Ice Cream Floats in 30 Seconds or Less!

Ice cream floats have been around forever. Some of the most unlikely flavors combine to make one of the yummiest, easiest and most frugal homemade ice cream treats around. Putting one together takes no time at all.

ice cream float, ice cream soda

You don't have to look far to find lots of different recipes and flavor combinations for ice cream floats. If you're looking for recipes that require a teaspoon of this, or a half cup of that.....you won't find it here.

What we do is what we call the tried and true Three "P" method. No measuring. No fuss. No time at all.

To do this you will need:
  • Some tall ice cream float glasses: Any tall glasses will do but if you want the real deal Walmart and even Dollar Tree sells them for cheapo.

  • Ice cream: Flavor is completely up to you, but vanilla goes with absolutely EVERYTHING.

  • Beverage: This usually has some fizz to it but that's certainly not required. No, really...you don't always need to use a carbonated drink to make ice cream floats.
Now...here are the instructions for the Three "P" method of making floats in 30 seconds or less.
  • Plop.....a scoop of ice cream in the glass.

  • Pour....in enough beverage to float your ice cream up to the top of the glass. This might not happen with a non-fizzy drink, but it will still be just as yummy.

  • Poke....in a straw. Swish it around a bit. Enjoy.

Now, at this point you could bump it up to advanced ice cream float making and add the 4th "P" which would be an additional "Plop" of ice cream. Making this a two scooper is strictly for the experienced ice cream eaters. This method might also make this a 35 second process. Hope you don't mind the extra wait.

The real fun of making floats is in all the different taste combinations you can concoct with different ice cream and beverage flavors. Create your own ice cream flavors with these ice cream in a bag recipes and make custom flavored floats for everybody.

Homemade Ice Cream Float Recipes

Try These and Many Other Flavor Combos
  • Root Beer and Vanilla Ice Cream: This is the classic ice cream soda, also known as "floats" because the bubbles in the root beer make the scoop float to the top. If you like root beer this is sure to be a favorite.
  • a&w root beer floats
  • Fruit Juice and Vanilla Ice Cream: Do this with orange juice and you get a yummy creamsicle in a glass. Cranberry and Pomegranite juice bring a tart flavor that may only be appreciated by adults.
  • Fruit Juice and Sherbert: This is a great opportunity to mix fruity flavors. Orange or Raspberry sherbert with lemonade are a great mix. If you want to take this to the next level, make this float with this country style recipe for lemonade.
  • Chocolate Milk and Chocolate Ice Cream: For the true chocolate lover, the difference between this float and a chocolate shake is just a few pulses in a blender. Adults may want to add a 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee to turn this into a Mocha float.
  • Ginger Ale and Specialty Ice Creams: Ginger ale or any lemon lime soda can add a fizzy twist to most ice creams but couple them with things like bubblegum, cotton candy, or strawberry cheesecake ice cream and you've got a real winner with your kids.

Ice Cream Float Extras

Here is a list of some flavors you might want to mix in, or plop on top of your floats to make them extra good.

  • Fruit Slices
  • A shot of Rum or Vodka -- For you, not the kids
