Too Hot ?...Too Cold ?...Raining ? Here are some Indoor Games for Kids

Finding indoor games for kids can sometimes be a challenge, especially if your kids are active. As much as they love to be outside, my kids still spend quite a bit of time indoors on the weekends, usually because of the weather.

It doesn't usually cost much to entertain your kids at home but it can be hard to find something they want to do. Have you ever made countless suggestions to a bored child of things for them to do only to hear, "Nah", "No", "Don't feel like it", or the infamous, "That's no fun.” Fun indoor activities can sometimes be elusive.

I love activities that encourage the use of imagination. Since my kids are still fairly young they will sometimes engage in good old-fashioned "Playing Pretend".

Sometimes that involves costumes and props. You can add some fun to this by providing an actual Costume Box for such occasions. You’d be surprised at the things in your closet and around the house that can stir a child’s imagination and keep them occupied for hours in a world they’ve created for themselves.

Here are some other indoor games for kids that can provide hours of fun for your family on those days where everybody is going to be home.

Coloring Games

Most children love to color, and to be honest, I enjoy it too. I find it relaxing to sit and color with my kids. It’s a nice way to have relaxed conversation with them too. Some coloring books come with coloring pages as well as activity and game pages. I find it a lot easier to print pages from the internet, especially at the spur of the moment. Sometimes my kids will even ask me to print pages for them.

Here is a great site for coloring and activity pages.

Board Games and Jigsaw Puzzles

Board games are a lot of fun and some families even designate weekly family game nights. Puzzles are great because the whole family can sit around the table and work on one puzzle at the same time. This is also a great opportunity to spark some conversation. For larger puzzles each person can be assigned a color. They seek out pieces in their color then work on putting together their section of the puzzle. As the puzzle comes together, help each other finish up the individual sections then bring all the sections together to complete the puzzle.

Surf Indoors

Some of the coolest indoor games for kids can be found on the internet. Lots of parents have very strong feelings about when, or even if they should allow their children access to the internet. The internet can pose some dangers, especially to children. If you do decide to allow some internet access there are some great websites out there for kids. If you follow a few simple online safety tips and set some clear rules, the internet can provide a lot of indoor fun. It’s also a great educational tool.

Cut the Rug

You definitely don’t want your kids running around the house as if it were the park, but dancing is a great way for kids to burn off extra energy and get some indoor exercise. Just put in someone’s favorite CD and start moving. If someone knows the electric slide or country line dance steps they can teach the others, or make up your own family line dance.

“Simon Says” and “Hide and Seek”, are other indoor games for kids that will get the family moving. Click here for instructions to these and some other really fun indoor games.

These are just some of the ways that we have indoor fun.
