Candy Game

Who doesn't like indoor party games that require candy? This is a great ice breaker game.

Before the party create a color topic list using topics appropriate to your guests based on their ages.

Check out this example:

Red candy: favorite hobbies
Green candy: favorite foods
Yellow candy: favorite movies
Orange candy: favorite subject in school
Brown candy: favorite tv star/show
Blue candy: wild cards (they can share from any topic they choose)

Pour a big bowl of Skittles, M&M's or any other multicolor candy and have everyone in the group grab as much or as little as they like. No one should eat any yet.

For each piece of candy they take players will have to answer a question, depending on its color.

Be creative and choose any questions you think would be appropriate for your guests. The person running the game (probably you Mom) will call out the color picked randomly from the candy remaining in the bowl.

Everyone then goes around the room sharing 1 answer per candy for that color. Like in our example:

If red is chosen then anyone holding two red candies will have to give two answers to the question. After they've answered the questions they can go ahead and eat just those candies.

Continue around the room until each color has been chosen.

Telephone Charades

This indoor party game is fun to play and funny to watch. No props needed either.

Choose an action that is specific, funny and very animated to act out (milking a cow, riding a bull, skydiving).

Have everyone stand shoulder to shoulder then look to the right.

Starting at the left of the line tap the first person on the shoulder and whisper the action to the first person.

That person then taps the second person on the shoulder and acts out the clue using charades rules (no talking allowed, no noises).

Once the second person thinks they've got it, they tap the third person and act the clue out to them.

This continues down the line until it reaches the last person, who must guess what the action is.

This game can be a real riot because the actions change and get misinterpreted as it goes down the line.

To make it go faster, break large groups up into teams of 5 or 6 and see who gets the clue first.

String Surprise

This is one of those indoor party games that needs some prep time, but it's worth it because you can use your furniture as obstacles to make it more fun.

You'll Need:
  • Enough small prizes for everyone.

  • Plenty of yarn, string or twine
Cut some pretty long pieces of yarn. One for each prize.

three girls at birthday party
Tie the prize to one end of your yarn then hide the prize. Work the yarn around the room, looping over and around furniture until you get the end of the string.

Tag the end so it's easy to spot.

Do this with all the prizes making sure to overlap strings as you go.

Give everyone a string and have everyone follow it until they get to their prize.

The longer the strings are, and the more they intersect and loop around, the more fun this game is.

To make it bit easier use different colored strings. For older kids or even adults, make this a little more difficult by using the same color string for every prize.

I Spy

Pick someone to be IT.

IT looks around and finds an object that everyone playing the game can see.

Then IT says, "I spy with my little eye something that is.. ." and then they go on to give a clue about the object.

The other players take turns asking questions about the object until someone guesses the correct answer.

The one making the correct guess then chooses the next object.

Penny In A Pinch

This indoor party game doesn't require much space and all you need are some pennies and a wide mouth jar. A clean tomato sauce jar is perfect.

Two at a time, have players start at opposite sides of the jar about 10 feet away from it.

On GO each player walks to the jar with their penny between their knees and tries to drop it inside the jar.

If the penny is dropped that player has to go back to their start line.

The first to get their penny in the jar wins.

You can have one winner for each pair, or keep playing winners against each other until there is just one winner left.

I'm Going on a Journey

This is a memory indoor party game.

The first person starts the game by saying, "I am going on a journey and I am bringing with me a _____."
They name an object that begins with the letter "A".

The next person repeats the line with the object the first person named, and then they add an object that begins with the letter B, and so on.

This goes on with each player trying to remember each object in alphabetical order then adding their own object using the next letter of the alphabet.

Freeze Dance

If you have space for slightly active indoor party games this is a great game if you have everyone dance in place.

You will need:
  • Music you can start and stop

You will need a music monitor (probably you again mom).

Have everyone pick a spot and start the music - stopping it in short intervals.

Everyone is free to dance until the music stops then they must freeze immediately.

Keep an eye on everyone. You might need help with this, because anyone who is still moving when the music stops, or who doesn't hold their pose until the music starts again is out.

The last one in is the winner.

Make it more fun by changing the pace at which you start and stop the music to keep it unexpected.

Two Truths and A Lie

A popular indoor party game that goes by many different names.

Players sit in a circle and one guest tells three things about themself. Two of the things are true and one is a lie.

The other players have to guess which is the lie.

The game continues around the circle.

Candy Taste Test

This is a really fun indoor party game and will quickly become a kid favorite.

You will need:

  • A variety of Candy Bars
  • Pen and paper for each player
  • A Bowl for each type of candy

Purchase several different types of candy bars. I find the most frugal way to do this is by purchasing those $1 packs that come with 8 snack size bars in each pack. Dollar stores sell them and so does Walmart when I last looked.

Before the party chop up the candy bars into small bits and put each type of candy bar in its own bowl.

Number each bowl. Make sure you write down what kind of candy is in each bowl so you don't forget, but keep the list out of sight.

Have each player take a taste of candy from each bowl. They need to guess what kind of candy is in each bowl and write it on their paper. Ex: 1. Snickers, 2. Three Musketeers, 3. Nestle Crunch and so on.

When they think they have them all they can turn in their answer sheet.

Check everyones answers and give a prize to everyone who got them all right.

A goody bag with one of each type of candy is good prize, but be prepared to have a lot of them handy.

Bingo

Bingo cards printed with words unique to your theme can be a great addition to your indoor party games.

You'll Need:
  • Some Bingo cards you can make and print yourself Here.

  • Bowls of candy like M&M's, Skittles, or anything a good size to use as markers.

Print up your cards and a set of words for calling. Give everyone some markers and start the fun! Don't forget to have several small prizes on hand so you can play more than once.

Knowing there is a prize at the end of this indoor party game might help keep everyone from eating the markers. :)

Balloon Catch

A good addition to yours indoor party games if you can create a large open space. This is also a great game to play outdoors.

You will need:

  • Some numbered slips of paper
  • Safety pins
  • A balloon

  1. Make sure you have enough numbered slips of paper for everyone. Have each person pick a number and pin it to their chest.
  2. The person with the highest number take the balloon and goes first.
  3. They throw the balloon in the air and call out a number. The person with that number has to catch the balloon before it hits the floor.
  4. If they don't catch it they're out. If they do catch it then they are the next person to throw the balloon.

Play until everyone has has a turn or until there is only one person left standing.

Cottonball Pass

All you need for this game are enough plastic straws for everyone and a bag of cottonballs.

  1. Split everyone up into teams and give everyone a straw.
  2. Give the first person on each team a cottonball and have them suck it onto the end of the straw. On "Go" the person with the cottonball has to pass it from their straw to the next person in line who will "vacuum" the cottonball from the first straw onto their own.
  3. No hands allowed.

  4. The cottonball continues down the line from straw to straw.

The first team to get their cottonball all the way down the line of players wins.

Tic Toc Time's Up

A fast-paced game great for all ages.

You will need:

  • A Kitchen Timer
  • A Brown Paper Lunch Bag

Have everyone sit in a circle on the floor.

Quickly set the timer for a random time then pop it in the bag and close it up. Taping the top will keep it from opening up during the game.

Hand the bag to the closest player in the circle.

Players have to pass the bag around the circle and keep it moving.

The person holding the bag when the timer goes off is out.

Bean Swap

An icebreaker indoor party game that can be played when guests first arrive or played throughout the entire event.

Another frugal game. All you will need is a bag of beans.

As guests arrive give them each 10 beans and explain that if they are asked a question and only answer "Yes" or "No", they must give a bean to the person who asked the question.

The person with the most beans at the end of the game wins a prize.

Indoor Garden Scavenger Hunt

This is an easy, inexpensive way to have a scavenger hunt indoors. It's especially fun for little kids. It's also an equally fun outdoor birthday party game. You'll Need:
  • Construction Paper - Red, Green, Yellow, Orange
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  1. Cut basic fruit and veggie shapes from the colored paper. Apples, Carrots, Oranges and Lemons are the easiest. Use the green paper to make carrot tops and stems and glue on. Make enough so you have one of each for each guest.

  2. Hide the "produce" around the house. In the bookshelf, under couch cushions, or tucked behind chairs.

  3. Have your guests hunt for the produce. No one is allowed more than one of each fruit or veggie. If they find something they already have, they should leave it in it's hiding place.

  4. Once each guest finds all their garden goodies they can turn them in for a prize.

Pin Search

This is the 'round the room' version of Pins and Rice.

You will need:

  • A fairly deep bowl filled with uncooked rice.
  • At least 100 tiny safety pins - these can be found in the craft department of your local discount store.
  • A small notepad and a pen
  • A scarf or bandana to use as a blindfold

This game is played throughout the party, one person at a time.

Pour the safety pins in the bowl of rice and mix them in well.

Going from person to person, blindfold each person. Give them 30-60 seconds to use one hand to find as many pins as they can.

Use the notepad to keep track of each persons total.

At the end of the party give prizes for the most pins found.

Shrinking Dance Floor

My favorite of the indoor party games. This needs a little space but if you've got a large enough living room or basement rec area it's a lot of fun.

You will need:

  • Music you can start and stop
  • Sheets of newspaper or plastic table covers cut in half

I purchase table covers from the dollar store and cut them in half to play this game because our local newpaper pages aren't as large as it they used to be.

  1. Break kids up into teams of two dance partners.
  2. Give each team a sheet of newspaper or half of a plastic table cover.
  3. Have the teams spread their sheet out on the floor between them. This will be their dance floor.
  4. Start the music and have everyone dance. When the music stops both partners must be on their "dance floor". No part of their feet can be off the sheet.
  5. After each round of music, any team that isn't on their dance floor is out. (Either one or both partners can cause a team to be out.)
  6. Before the next round of dancing teams must fold their "dance floor" in half.
  7. Teams continue to dance and fold their dance floors smaller and smaller until just one team is left standing.

As the dance floors shrink it's a riot to see how creative partners get in order to stay in this indoor party game.

Wet Your Whistle

I saw this game played at my sons scout meeting and thought it would make a great indoor party game by turning it into a bit of a team relay.

  • Break your party up into teams of 3 or 4.

  • Give each team a bunch of crackers. Enough for each player to have one.

  • On "Go" the first person on each team starts eating their cracker. With the whole cracker in their mouth they try to whistle.

  • Once that person is able to whistle the next person in the team takes their turn.

The first team to that is able to have everyone whistle wins!

Mystery Memory

Memory games are great indoor party games. This game can be used for any theme by simply using trinkets forcused on your theme.

You will need:

  • A tray full of small toys and trinkets. The more there are the more difficult, and fun, this game will be.

Place all your toys and trinkets on display on the tray then cover them.

When you're ready to play have every gather around and take a good look at what's on the tray. Give them about a minute or two to look.

They cover the tray with the cloth and give everyone a slip of paper and pencil

.

Give everyone 90 seconds to write down as many things as they can remember seeing on the tray. To make this even more difficult. Place some items on the table around the tray.

Only items actually on the tray count as correct.

Whoever lists the most items correctly wins.
