My kids always eat better when they've helped prepare the meal. We also have a lot of good conversations and a lot of laughs around our kitchen table, either while making the food, or eating it. I've also found that a great way to introduce my kids to new flavors, and seasonings is to let them add those ingredients themselves. If they helped cook it, they want to eat it.
