Scavenger Hunt

Pinata

Pinatas are a great kids outdoor party game. They are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased at any party supply store or even in some Walmarts. Look in the party goods section.

Fill the pinata with candy. Hang it over an open space. Blindfold each child and have them take a couple whacks at the pinata.

Depending on the age group, instead of hitting the pinata, you can can use one that has streamers hanging from the bottom and party goers can take turns pulling streamers until the one that opens the door holding all the candy is ripped off.

TIP: Sometimes there can be a frenzy when the candy spills from the pinata. Make sure to have extra candy on hand for the kids who don't get much in the candy scramble.

Beach Blanket Ball Toss

This kids outdoor party game is great for older kids, teens and adults. It requires some skill at working in pairs. :) Two pairs compete against each other.

You will need:

  • 1 beach towel for every two players
  • 1 beach ball for every 4 players
You'll need plenty of outdoor space for this game and it's best played on grass.
  1. Each team is made up of two pair of players.
  2. Each pair get a beach towel and they hold the towel at opposite corners, so it kind of looks like a hammock between them.
  3. The first pair puts the ball in the center of their towel and toss it into the air to the other team.

  4. The other pair tries to catch the ball in their blanket. Then then toss the ball back to the other team.
  5. If a team misses a catch then the other team gets a point.
The first team to 4 points wins.

Feather Race

This is a fun race that is easily played by breaking up into teams of 3 or more depending on the size of your group and the amount of space you have to race.

You Will Need:

  • Feathers
  • Straws
  1. Designate a "start" line and "turn around" line.
  2. Each team gets a feather. Each player gets a straw.

  3. Everyone puts their feather down on the start line and on GO the first person on each team uses their straw to blow their feather to the turn around line and back to the start line.
  4. Each player on the team takes a turn with the feather. The first team to have each player complete the task wins.

You can also vary this kids outdoor party game by having teams of two, and having each team work together to blow their feather to the finish line.

Or have one player at the start and one at the turn around. Have the first player blow the feather to the second, who then blows it back to the start. First one to cross the line wins.

Beach Ball Relay

This kids outdoor party game is perfect for groups of twelve or more.

You will need:

  • Beach balls - the smaller ones for younger kids
  1. Break the group up into two teams and have them line up facing forward with a foot or so in between each player.
  2. The beach ball starts at the feet of the first player in line.
  3. On GO the first person picks up the ball and passes it over their head to the 2nd person in line.

That person then passes the ball between their legs to the 3rd person. That person then passes the ball over their head to the 4th person.

  4. Players pass the ball in this over / under pattern until the last person in line gets the ball.
  5. When the last person in line gets the ball they run to the front of the line and start passing the ball back again in the same pattern until everyone has been at the front of the line.
  6. When the original first person makes it back to the front of the line they place the ball back at their feet indicating that they're back to where they started.
The first team to finish wins. This kids outdoor party game can be played for any occasion. All you need to do is switch out the beach balls for things like a stuffed animal, a princess crown, a pumpkin or any other object that can be passed safely depending on the theme of your party. I saw this done once at an easter egg hunt with young children using stuffed bunnies...Too Cute!

**Popcorn can be a choking hazard to small children.

This game is a lot of fun for older kids.

You will need:

  1. Place the empty bowls at the finish line.
  2. Divide up into teams and give each team a bowl of popcorn.
  3. One at a time teams carry popcorn to the empty bowl in their Dixie cup. They are only allowed to use one hand to scoop and carry as much popcorn as the Dixie cup will hold.

  1. Have each player blow up two balloons. You can do this ahead of time if you prefer.
  2. Tie a string to each balloon, then tie one balloon to each shoe leaving enough slack so the balloons drag on the ground when the player walks or runs.

Hula Hoop Contest

A classic kids outdoor party game. You will need:

  • A hula hoop for everyone - Ask the kids to bring their own, or buy them then let everyone take one home as a party favor.
  • Music you can start and stop.
At the start of the music everyone starts hula hooping for as long as they can. If the hoop falls or if they touch it with their hands they are out.

The last one standing still hula hooping is the winner.

Limbo

During our family vacation this past summer the hotel where we were having lunch started a limbo contest in the atrium lobby. They started music, held up a limbo stick and gave everyone who joined in a plastic Hawaiian lei. It was great fun and didn't require anything but a CD player and a stick. The lei's add color and fun. They're also a very inexpensive party favor.

You will need:

  • A broom stick - If you'd like you can decorate it with gift wrapping, garland, twinkling lights, or stickers to match your party theme.
Have two players hold up the limbo stick and start the music. Everyone passes under one at a time, bending backwards without touching the stick or the ground . Once everyone has had a turn the stick is lowered and everyone takes their next turn.

Once a player touches the stick or puts their hands, or knees on the floor they're out. This continues until there is only one player left.

Scavenger Hunt

Another really cool kids outdoor party game is a scavenger hunt. A scavenger hunt is a series of clues that lead you from one point to the next. At each point you collect designated objects. The first team to collect all the required objects wins.

A scavenger hunt can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. It can be tailored to your guests, your theme, or the season.

A hunt can happen indoors or outdoors. It can take lots of time or be short and quick.
