Make Your Own Vision Board

uplifting open field

In its simplest definition, to make your own vision board means to create a collage of words and images that helps you visualize your goals and dreams so you can move closer to making them reality.

I have a personal vision board, and in their own ways, my kids do too, but I thought we'd take it a step further and create a vision board as a family. My goal was to create one collage representing some goals we have a family as well as the things and people that are important to us that make us feel good, and that we focus good energy on.

We approached it as a lazy day free family craft without getting too "heavy" or "zen" about it. We had a lot of fun doing this and it was really interesting to hear about and see the kinds of things my kids chose to put on our board.

Here are some of the things you'll need to make your own family vision board.
  • A poster board

  • Lots of old magazines covering many different topics

  • Construction and/or Scrapbooking papers

  • Copies of any photos you may want to include

  • Markers, crayons, colored pencils

  • Scissors for everyone, and Glue
Of course you can add more to this list and put anything you want on the board.

You can take many different approaches to putting the board together. Everyone can cut out or create things that are important to them individually then you all come together to choose items that matter to the family as a whole.

  • Is a family vacation to a particular destination a goal for the future?
  • Do you guys want a backyard pool?
  • Does the family need a new minivan?
  • Do you want to spend more time together?
  • How about sharing more meals around the table?
  • Do you all want a family pet?
  • In my mind a big part of this activity is focusing the families energy so it's not all about the material things we may want.

Are there people in your extended family that you want to have some focus on your family vision board? Maybe a picture of Grandma and Grandpa because they remind us of love. Is there someone in the military that you want to return home safely? Is there an ill family member that you want to wish a speedy recovery? Use photos that represent the outcome you'd like.

All of these things, people and feelings can be represented in one way or another. The vision board is all about your family and the things that you'd like to achieve as a family, as well as the things in your world that bring about good feelings and healthy relationships.

Steps to Make Your Own Vision Board

  1. Once you have all your supplies together sit with your family and go through the magazines and pictures, pulling out photos that represent the things that are important to you as a family and your own individual goals and dreams too.
  2. Talk about the choices then make your final selections for photos to go on the board. Remember, there are no right or wrong things to put on this vision board. Have everyone grab whatever "speaks" to them, then simply narrow it down if your board isn't big enough.
  3. Decide how you want to design the board. Should everyone get a section then put all the family goals in the center? Maybe you prefer a more scattered collage.
  4. Once the pictures are glued down you can add written messages or motivational quotes.
  5. Display your board in a place where everyone in the family can see it.
