Roller Skating Rinks
Roller Skating Rinks are great hangouts for families on a budget, or for older kids who want to spend an afternoon with their friends. It's inexpensive and lots of fun.
A few dollars for admission and skate rental gives you access to music, light effects, a snack bar and a couple of hours of healthy physical activity. Roller skating rinks are also a fun place to bring organizations together for a group activity. Scout troops, clubs, school groups or just groups of friends may be able to take advantage of special group rates or discounts depending on the number of people in the group.
You may also want to consider throwing your next kids birthday party at your local roller skating rink. It can be a more cost effective alternative to using a kids themed restaurant, and you may find it more convenient than having a large group in your home. It's an especially neat party idea for older kids. One fee will usually cover admission and skate rental, as well as food, drink and rink time for anything from 8 to 12 kids with a small additional fee for each child over the set amount. We had a skating party for my daughters 10th birthday and she and her friends had a blast. The cost was reasonable for 10 kids. We got a decorated table, with all the plates, napkins and eating utensils. It included enough pizza and soda for everyone with a dedicated server for 30 minutes, then 90 minutes of skate time. Each child also got a "junk ticket" which entitled them to a prize from the prize counter. I provided the cake, balloons and goodie bags.

Check for special off peak skating sessions, or sessions for specific age groups. Lots of rinks offer special rates during school breaks. Our rink even gives kids rewards for doing well in school by offering free skate rentals to anyone with an "A" or "B" on their current report card.
Ice skating rinks are also tons of fun but generally cost a little more than roller skating. If you do have an ice rink near you make sure your kids dress warmly and wear gloves, even to an indoor rink.
Whichever kind of skating rink you visit, your family is almost guaranteed a fun but affordable time.
