Save Money on Groceries: 10 Tips to Quick Savings
Do you need to save money on groceries, but don't have the time to sit, clip and file coupons? Me either, but I want to save money. I also want to make sure I don't cut corners on nutrition or taste. Here are 10 Quick Tips to keep in mind on your next shopping trip. - Shop with a List
Check your fridge and pantry and make note of all the things you need. Once in the store do not deviate from the list. If you find a sale you don't want to pass up, make sure it's an item you will put to use. You don't save money buying foods your family won't eat.
- Join the Discount Club
Take a few minutes and sign up for a stores discount club even if you don't shop there regularly. Most of the sale prices will be offered to members only, so it's worth it to join even if you only save on one or two items sporadically.
- Shop Early AM or After Dinner
The more time you spend in a store, the more money you are likely to spend. If you can shop on a weekday in the morning, or late evening you will find less crowds and be able to get through the checkout line more quickly.
- Have a Snack Before You Shop
Stores are filled with the aroma of fresh baked bread and Starbucks coffee for a reason. They are trying to tempt you into spending more money on impulse items, so don't shop hungry.
- Shop Alone
It certainly is much easier for me if I don't bring my kids to the grocery store, but sometimes it's actually fun to shop with them. Keep your kids from getting bored or restless by turning shopping into a learning experience. I make each of the younger ones responsible for finding certain items. I give my oldest the task of figuring out which items are the best deals so she can practice her math skills in the real world. She loves it when she finds a way to save money on groceries that I didn't see first.
- Always Check "per unit" Cost
Never assume that "sale" items are actually the best deal. Check out similar brands and compare size and/or weight to make sure you are getting the best "per unit" costs. This information can be found right on the price labels.
- Check Top and Bottom Shelves
Some companies pay fees to store chains for special placement knowing that shoppers will grab items at eye level first. Make sure you look on the top and bottom shelves for the best deals possible.
- Consider Generic Brands
If you've always shopped for name brands now might be the time to consider some generic items. A lot of times the only real difference is the price and fancy packaging. Compare ingredients. If they're identical (which in most cases they are) give the generic a try. Using generic items whenever you can is a surefire way to always save money on groceries.
- Buy the Sale Meats
I plan meals around whatever meats are on sale that week. If you have to stick with the cheaper cuts of meat then prepare them in the slow cooker. A slow cooker makes a yummy, tender meal out of the most inexpensive cut of meat in the store. If you don't have a slow cooker (Crock pot) it's a worthwhile investment for your family.
- Shop for Fresh Produce the Smart Way
Fresh produce can be pricey, but it's essential for healthy eating. When buying fresh produce make sure you buy "per bag", instead of "per pound" whenever you can. Grab the heaviest bag. Weigh it if you're unsure. Purchase high fiber produce like sweet potatoes, apples, berries, and peas to keep your family feeling full longer. Keeping just a few of these tips in mind each time you shop will let you keep serving nutritious meals to your family while you save money on groceries.
