Stained Glass Cookie

Stained Glass Cookies don't require much in the way of ingredients, but they can be a little difficult for small children to shape the way they want if the dough gets too warm. Just make sure the dough is well chilled before you start and put what's not being used back in the fridge until you need it again.

You Need:

  • Ready-to-Bake Sugar Cookie Dough
  • Wax Paper or Foil
  • Hard Candies (Ex: LifeSavers®, Jolly Ranchers® and the like)
  • Heavy Duty Baggie
  • Wooden Spoon

  1. Preheat oven to 350 or follow baking instructions on the dough.
  2. Work on a sheet of waxed paper or foil. It may need to be taped down.
  3. Spoon one heaping tablespoon of dough at a time to work with.
  4. Roll the dough into a long strip, about the width of a pencil then bring the two ends together and shape it however you like, making sure the shapes are wide enough to fill in. You can make circles, squares, even hearts for Valentine's Day, which is what we did.
  5. Put the shapes onto a no-stick baking sheet. This can be tricky so we pick up our shapes while they were still on the paper and flipped them onto the sheet.
  6. Put the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5 minutes.
  7. While the cookies are in the oven separate your candy colors and put several pieces of the same color in the baggie and whack them a few times with the wooden spoon to break them up.
  8. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and fill the open space with the crushed candy.
  9. Return the cookies to the oven and bake for another 3 minutes or until the edges are golden and the candy centers are bubbly.

Let your Stained Glass Cookies cool completely before removing them from the pan.

These cookies are a lot of fun to make and eat. With a little practice you can make some really neat "Stained Glass" designs.
