Because a garden is one of most frugal ways for your family to "go green" and get healthier.

These special Gardens date back to World Wars I and II. Citizens were encouraged to plant vegetable gardens to help the war effort. It was a time of cooperation and support across countries.

People raised food crops to feed themselves and help feed neighbors and troops. Home gardeners on the home front were growing as much as 40 percent of the vegetables consumed in the U.S. Millions of people planted gardens.

Eleanor Roosevelt had a one on the White House lawn back then, and there's now a Victory Garden on the White House lawn again.

We are not currently in a world war, but we are, in a manner of speaking, in a global war of economic and environmental survival.

We are living amid a precarious world economic downturn. We are facing increasing effects of global warming, climate change, and environmental pollution.

Food travels a long way to get to your table.

A great deal of fuel is spent and carbon dioxide released which contributes to the

problem of pollution and the greenhouse effect.

Conventional farming practices include the use of chemical—toxic—pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers which contaminate our soil and ground water, and harm all living things.

Planting your own garden is the perfect way to combat these environmental and economic issues.

If we ever needed to turn to a sustainable way of life it is now.

It not only will help you save money, it will also be another link towards conservation of resources, saving energy, and reducing pollution.
